Why I Love Whole Foods

My grandfather was in the grocery business, so I have a soft spot for locally-owned grocery stores. As kids, we spent a lot of time in grocery stores. I loved watching the produce guys hand write the signs that would hang in the windows. Like my grandfather and anyone in the grocery business back then, they had impeccable handwriting. I remember being enamored by their perfect lettering and their giant markers.

Each employee took pride in what they did and they made an effort to know their customers. On Fridays, the deli had the best fried catfish and banana pudding. Plus, kids could always get a snack at the counter — a slice of cheese or salami.

I love modern conveniences and technology and there are very few things that I miss from childhood, except the old, Italian grocery stores. I’d rather poke toothpicks in my eyeballs than shop at Wal-Mart. And while Target is worlds better, until they build a location within the actual city limits, I’m not driving that far for an average selection of groceries. I’m still very loyal to our remaining local grocers but I had no idea that I’d fall this hard for Whole Foods.

I never knew shopping could be this pleasant. If the produce, flowers and organic sugar cookies aren’t enough to woo you, here are my top five reasons I love Whole Foods:

#1 The 4-kid grocery cart. There are only a handful of places that I will take all of my kids to without having another adult. Whole Foods is top on that list because of the glorious 4-kid cart. They even have a smaller version (pictured at top) that seats two (or three Perrault kids).

Like a double jogger on steroids

#2 Snacks! Stop by the concierge for kids’ snacks or juice. By the time the kids knock that out, pick up some fruit or cheese samples to buy yourself additional time.

#3 Fabulous Groceries. Did I just pay $12 for meringue cups?

Oh sweet, free-range egg goodness

Yes I did.

#4 Local Products…and I will top them with my Ponchatoula strawberries.

#5 Handwritten Signs. I don’t care if they really aren’t done by hand, it’s the thought that counts. And clearly, they know me very well….

Thanks for the gentle reminder, my friend

When Good People Market Bad Things

In Marketing, Shopping on July 27, 2009 at 10:49 PM

I pride myself on my research.

Few things bring me more pleasure than researching potential purchases. I’ve always thought my due diligence was of the higher standard. I read reviews, I search, search, and search again. I read blogs, check out ratings and search some more.

My methodical approach has served me well: Nikon D-90 — brilliant;  BOB double jog stroller — perfect; Tory Burch sandals — lust-worthy. It wasn’t until the Maytag Neptune that I questioned the existence of the Internet.

Absolutely, the worst washing machine EVER. Seriously, how this mammoth navigated its way out of research and development is incomprehensible. Sadly, it did and with a rockstar team of marketers behind it, I fell for it. Five-star rating after five-star rating. Number one on Consumer Reports. All total BS. This sucker twists, rips and shreds clothes beyond belief and somehow doesn’t remove crumbs.

Nine months after I purchased the Maytag Neptune, it was pulled off the market. Research it now and you’ll find a myriad of reports on class action lawsuits. My only hope now is that one of those savvy PR execs monitoring MAYTAG online mentions sees this and feels bad about my poor, mutilated swimsuit coverup.
